As of 7 September 2026: all 193 UN members and both observer states, selected other states, territories and regional flags, and influential historical designs. Minor colour and star-count changes are consolidated.
Dates identify the principal design or historical period; early dates may be approximate. One entry may cover several periods of use.
The whole atlas shows each flag once. Use “Trace full lineage” to join a flag’s branches. Downward arrows show ancestry and redesigns; shaded horizontal groups show shared traditions and resemblance. Vertical spacing follows generations.
Flag histories and relationships have source links. Coverage is selective; uncertain claims are labelled.
Historical illustrations are credited individually to their authors and the FOTW Flags Of The World website, under its noncommercial reuse terms. Some current illustrations come from SVG Flags (licence) and Country Flags.
Illustrations retain their source proportions. Historical variants, references and credits are recorded in the dataset.
